Obituary

Betty "Nonny" Burnett, age 96, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, in Wills Point, Texas. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of her community, she leaves behind a legacy of faith, family devotion, and spirited generosity.

Born Betty Kathryn Johnson on July 24, 1928, in Edgewood, Texas, she was the daughter of Harry Lee Johnson and Jessie Eunice Pearson. She graduated from Edgewood High School as part of the Class of 1946. In her early years, Betty laid the foundation for a life rooted in hard work and service to others—values that would define her for nearly a century.

Betty married Raymond "Pop" Burnett and together they shared 59 years of marriage before his passing in 2006. Their partnership was one of enduring love and mutual support.

She worked as a bookkeeper at Edgewood Milling Company and Herrin's Feed and Seed for many years.

For 33 years, Betty and her husband owned and operated Burnett's Drive-In in Wills Point. Together they built both a family and a business that would become central to their lives and to the Wills Point community. The store was more than just a place to shop—it was a gathering spot where neighbors became friends and where Betty's warm smile and friendly spirit welcomed all who walked through the door. Her dedication to her work reflected her deep commitment to serving others with kindness and integrity.

A woman of many talents, Betty had a passion for tooled leatherwork—a craft she not only mastered but also taught to others. She found joy in sewing and cooking as well, often sharing her creations with family and friends. Her home was filled with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals and the warmth of handmade treasures.

Betty's faith was central to her life. A devoted Baptist, she was an active member of First Baptist Church of Wills Point, where she was honored as the oldest living member at the 150 year celebration in 2024. Her spiritual strength guided her through life's joys and challenges alike. She also found fellowship through her involvement with the Eastern Star organization, where she was known for her friendly demeanor and spirited presence.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: sons Don Burnett; R.P. "Pat" Burnett and his wife Patricia; Cris Burnett and his wife Daphne; and daughter Ramona Oats and her husband Gary. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Nancy Morris (Jamie), Jeremy Oats (Sherry Langdon), Taylor Wingo (Bo), Wesley Raitt, Neeley Bryan (Jeff), and Heather Keahey (Kyle). She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren: Lola Wingo, Joyner Wingo, Rowie Bryan, Ottie Bryan, Ty Keahey, and Dean Keahey.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband Raymond "Pop" Burnett; parents Harry Lee Johnson and Jessie Eunice Pearson; grandson Richie Oats; sisters Nell Jackson and Ruth Cuny; and daughter-in-law Judy Burnett.
