They married on September 1, 1957 in Tyler in a ceremony officiated by her father Reverend G. Mouzon Fletcher at St. Paul Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Apache Belles of Tyler Junior College and graced the walls of the Bullock Texas State History Museu m in the Apache Belles exhibit . True to her hallmark wit, when she saw the exhibit in 2001 , she said "you know you' re old when your picture hangs on the wall of a history museum." She moved to Austin to attend The University of Texas where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. From that day forward, she remained a Texas Longhorn and as a season ticket holder, enjoyed attending football games in Austin for 60 years.
Her first teaching job was in 1959 at O'Henry Junior High School in Austin. She moved with her husband Tony to West Texas soon after and taught in Monahan s , Snyder, and Midland . In 1969, at Midland Lee High School, her students dedicated the Rebelee yearbook to her in a fitting tribute, "Because She Cares." From Midland, she and Tony moved to Amarillo where they welcomed their daughter Heather in Ma rch of 1971. S he earned her Master of Arts in 1974 from West Texas State University.
After moving to Houston in 1974, she began teaching at Stratford High School in 1975. In 1980, she was named Chair of the English Department at Stratford. In her 30 years as a teacher at Stratford , she influenced the lives of countless young students and mentored scores of new and experienced educators, as well. Her dynamic and caring dedication to teaching was recognized by the American and Houston Associations of Petroleum Landmen when she was named the recipient of the Elizabeth Brand Teacher Excellence Award in 1991.
As the daughter of a Methodist Minister, June was an active member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. June and her husband Tony were one of five founding couples of the Genesis Sunday School Class at Chapelwood , a class that was founded 30 years ago and has grown to a membership over one hundred members. June was specifically instrumental in the growth of the Genesis class when she invited her mother Frances Fletcher to develop a music program centered on her lively piano playing . The Genesis class is known for their contributions to the church and their charitable works.
A grave side service is planned at 2:00 on Mon day, August 31 st , 2020 , at White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point, Texas . A celebration of life service will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas at a later date .
