Daniel "Heavy" Leon Thornburgh, a man known for his courage, passion, and skilled hands, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, in Tyler, Texas. Born on December 3, 1943, in Ben Wheeler, Texas, Heavy lived a full and meaningful life marked by dedication, hard work, and deep family bonds.
Growing up, Heavy attended Canton Schools through the eighth grade, laying the foundation for a life that would be rich in practical knowledge and perseverance. He was self-employed as an operator of heavy equipment until his retirement in 2009, a career that reflected his love for working with his hands and his commitment to providing through honest labor. Beyond his professional life, Heavy found joy and purpose in farming, a hobby and interest that connected him deeply to the land and his community.
For over 50 years, Heavy shared a loving marriage with Arcie Henry, a partnership that began in Louisiana. Their shared life was a testament to steadfast devotion and mutual support.
Heavy’s family was the center of his world. He is survived by his wife, Arcie Thornburgh; his sons, Robert McElwee and Jerry McElwee; daughters Kathy Moore and her husband Randy, and Pamela Zapata and her husband Tony. His legacy extends to his grandchildren Correna, Tulana, Chad, Steven, Natasha, Britney, Kassedi, Jonah, and Kevin, who, along with his nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, will carry forward his memory with love and respect.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Daniel R. Thornburgh and Lazema Fincher Thornburgh, and his daughter, Elizabeth Turner.
A graveside service celebrating Heavy’s life will be held on May 14, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Myrtle Springs Cemetery, located on County Road 3442 in Myrtle Springs, Texas. Family, friends, and all who knew Heavy are invited to gather in honor of a man who lived courageously, loved passionately, and worked diligently.
Heavy Leon Thornburgh’s lasting impression on his family, friends, and community is a reflection of a life well-lived — marked by strength, kindness, and an enduring commitment to those he loved. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
