Danny James
Thornton
October 2, 1946 – September 5, 2025
Danny James Thornton, age 78, passed away on September 5, 2025, in Wills Point, Texas. A devoted educator, coach, and family man, Danny left a lasting legacy through his passion for teaching and his unwavering dedication to those around him.
Born on October 2, 1946, in Fairbury, Illinois, Danny was the son of Harry Thornton and Agarita Maurine Wessels. He graduated from Fairbury High School in 1965 and went on to attend Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. There he not only earned his master's degree in 1972 but also played basketball at the collegiate level—an experience that would shape his lifelong commitment to athletics and mentorship.
Danny's professional journey reflected his deep love for education. Over the years, he held teaching and coaching positions at Black Hawk East College, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Oklahoma Baptist University, Seminole High School, and Sapulpa Junior High and High School. His teaching career culminated with his role as Assistant Superintendent of the Sapulpa School District, from which he retired in 2015. At every institution he served, Danny was known simply—and affectionately—as "Coach," a title that spoke volumes about the respect he earned from students and colleagues alike.
Beyond the classroom and court, Danny was a man of many passions. He found joy in carving wooden decoy ducks—a craft that showcased both his patience and creativity. He also cherished time spent on Caribbean islands, where he could relax and reflect amid tropical beauty. Above all else, Danny loved his family deeply and wholeheartedly.
He is survived by his beloved wife Gay Huddleston; daughter Lisa Corcoran and husband, Darrell; sons Terry Thornton and wife, Kristine, Mark Huddleston and wife, Kelcy, and Kyle Huddleston; brother David Thornton; sister Barb Tervavainen; grandchildren Cody Corcoran (Ashley), Katie Corcoran, Kyle Thornton, Brooke Thornton, Tyler Thornton, Hank Huddleston, and Will Huddleston; and three great-grandchildren.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents Harry Thornton and Agarita Maurine Wessels; stepfather, Gerald Vaughan; brothers Terry Thornton and Ray Thornton.
Courageous in spirit, intelligent in thought, and selfless in action—these are just a few of the qualities that defined Danny throughout his life. His impact will continue to be felt by generations of students he taught and coached as well as by the family who loved him dearly.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
