Ginger Jane Wiley debuted at the North Plains Hospital in Borger on Oct. 20, 1946. Ginger was the second child of her parents, Guy Prentiss Wiley and the former Dawn Rowe. Her only sibling, Kent Wiley (BHS ’62), was three years her senior.

Ginger grew up in Borger Texas and graduated from Borger High School in 1965. She met her husband Eddie Derr in high school and they married August 23, 1968. She attended Frank Phillips Junior College her freshman year and then went on to West Texas State where she majored in elementary education, belonged to Alpha Chi sorority and graduated with honors in January, 1970. She was also active in the Crescents at WT, an auxiliary organization that supported the charitable work of WT fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha.

Ginger made her career in public school as an elementary teacher at various schools through out her career and later on as a school librarian. She touched so many young people's lives and was an instrumental force that many still remember to this day.

The Derrs were still going to WT in Canyon, TX when their first child Lori Catherine was born on April 2, 1969. They were living in Dumas when their second child, Damon Edward, was born May 31, 1974, and near Friona when their third (and last) child, Cody Lynn, was born Oct. 4, 1978. Eddie and Ginger retired from education in 2005. In their retirement years, the Derrs bought a home on Lake Medina, about 40 miles NW of San Antonio. They also purchased a motorhome and spent a couple of years enjoying it and their grandchildren.

After more than 50 years of marriage, Eddie and Ginger amicably divorced early in 2021. On April 17, 2021, Ginger married William Andrew “Bill” Groce in Streetman, TX. Bill is a retired Sergeant Major from the US Army. They have enjoyed these last 5 years together and were able to take a couple of cruises, travel to see her family in Colorado and Iowa and travel to see the Ark as well as attend as many of her grandchildren's' events as she could. From football, basketball, baseball, soccer, theater, band, dancing, FFA, to all of the other events, she always showed up for her kids and grandkids.

Ginger’s family was the air that she breathed. She was truly the sweetest, most caring and most loving person you have ever met. She had the biggest heart and truly her legacy is her family and love. She also was an amazing cook and baker that everyone raved about. Her pies and cakes were to die for! If you were coming to her house she was baking you a pie or cake especially for you. The world was a better place with her in it and we know she will live on in each of her family until we see her again. We take comfort knowing she is with Jesus and our little angel Benjamin.

The obituary was lovingly written by the family.

The family will hold a a memorial service at a later date.
