Obituary

Hazel Mae Nelson, née Van Skoyck, passed away peacefully at home in Lone Oak, Texas, on April 5, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on December 11, 1952, in Dayton, Ohio, Hazel was a woman whose vibrant spirit touched many lives. Throughout her life, she was known for her wild and sometimes controlling nature, balanced with a goofy charm that could bring a smile even on the darkest of days.

Hazel's career as a waitress was marked by dedication and warmth, traits that made her a familiar and cherished presence in her community. Beyond her professional life, Hazel was passionate about the little wonders of the world—she loved the excitement of the casino, the delicate beauty of butterflies, and had a deep affection for plants, animals, and hummingbirds that often fluttered near her thriving garden.

She was a spirited soul whose uniqueness was both her strength and her signature. Hazel was loved not only by her family but also by many who knew her as a friend and confidante. Her life was a mosaic of heartfelt moments, laughter, and the natural curiosities that made every day with her special.

Hazel is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Mark Wallace; her beloved daughter, Helen Webb, and son-in-law Bill; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Webb and his wife Jenn, and John Webb; as well as her great-grandchildren Tyler McGriff and Chloe Webb. She shared a special bond with her favorite sister-in-law, Denise Wallace and her husband "Dubby", and brother-in-law, Shane Wallace. Her nephew, Zac Wallace, along with his wife Vivian “Serena,” also carry her memory in their hearts. Hazel’s life was enriched by the deep friendships she treasured, including her special friend Danny Johnson and her devoted caretakers Teresa Hock and Perry Warren, who all stood by her side with unwavering support and love.

Hazel's parents, Richard Van Skoyck and Helen Newman Van Skoyck, and her brother, Glenn Melvin “Dink” Van Skoyck, preceded her in death. Though they are gone, their memory lives on through the stories and the ties of love they established with Hazel.

A memorial service celebrating Hazel’s life will be held at her residence, 4178 Pueblo, Lone Oak, Texas, on April 11, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Family, friends, and all who were touched by Hazel’s wild spirit and loving heart are invited to gather to honor her memory.

Hazel’s legacy is one of colorful joy, heartfelt connection, and an unmistakable zest for life. She will be dearly missed and forever cherished. May she rest gently in peace.
