Hortense Dunn was born on July 21, 1930, to Oscar and Violet Fitzgerald Wright. She received her formal education at Cartwright School, where she graduated Valedictorian of her class.
Hortense married James Melvin Dunn on February 11, 1956, and together they reared fifteen children. She was a dedicated mother first and foremost, and she instilled a love for God in her children by her life's example.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member of St. Mark CME Church where she served the Lord faithfully until her health failed. Her ministries at St. Mark included: Senior Choir President, the Stewardess Board, the Missionary Society, the Pastor's Aide Committee, the Mass Choir, a former Church Secretary, a former member of the East Texas Mass Choir, a member of the Heroines of Jericho, and she sang with the Golden Voices on second Sundays.
Hortense was a true woman of faith. She had a servant's heart and she lived life serving others. She always reached out to those in need and she will always be remembered for her grace and kindness toward others. On December 27,
Mrs. Hortense Dunn answered the call of her Heavenly Father.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Dunn; parents, Oscar and Violet Wright; sons, Oscar Dunn, Arthur Ray Dunn, and Michael Dunn; daughters, Brenda Dunn and Chandra Dunn; great-grandson, Brendan Dunn Carraway; brothers, Jessie Butler, James Hutcherson, and Napoleon Wright; sisters, Leatha Hawkins, Verlene Wright, Mildred Faye Wright, and Arnesia Morris.
Hortense leaves to cherish her memories; her children, Debra Lyons, Joe Wright (Vonda), Warren Dunn (Sherri), Gregory Dunn (Lashanda), Oliver Dunn, Cherlyn Dunn, Carlton Dunn (Taisha), Herbert Dunn, Lisa Dunn, and Kevin Dunn; one sister, Norma Booker; one sister-in-law, Pauline Wright; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, and her special friends: Tonya Coffman, Sheila Griffin, Jackie Hamilton, Lisa Jernigan, Gwen Paul, Regina Spencer, Patricia Stanford, and Annette Wright.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 3, 2020, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Allan Fuller Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 11:00am at St. Mark Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Wills Point.
