James Charley Rushing, 95, passed away on March 3, 2025, in Wills Point, Texas. Born on December 19, 1929, in Collin County, Texas, he lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication to his family, hard work, and service to his community.
James was raised in Blue Ridge, Texas, and graduated from Blue Ridge High School. He went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army from July 1952 to May 1954 during the Korean War. His time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of duty and perseverance that carried through every aspect of his life.
Following his service, James built a long and successful career in the food industry. He worked for many years at Luby's Cafeteria before continuing in the restaurant business until his retirement in the early 2000s. His work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his career, earning him the respect of colleagues and customers alike.
On September 9, 1949, James married Annell Rushing, with whom he shared a loving marriage until her passing on October 31, 2018. Together, they built a life centered around faith, family, and hard work. A devoted member of Hayden Baptist Church in Wills Point, James found strength and community in his faith.
James had a deep love for the land and spent much of his time raising cattle, fishing, and cutting and baling hay. He also enjoyed crafting wooden writing pens—a testament to his patience and skill. James also enjoyed sports such as playing golf and coaching baseball. However, nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his son Bruce Rushing (Stacey), daughter Terri Glover (Roger), brother Edwin Rushing (Joyce), sister Annie Ruth Worley; grandchildren Chris Rushing, John Rushing (Rachel), Matthew Rushing, Whitney Hayes, Mike Zekert, Cody Glover (Ashley), Heather Ripley (Jeremy), Rebecca Zekert, and Johnathan Zekert; great-grandchildren Ginny Cunningham, Chase Ripley, Hannah Ripley, Bailey Herrick (Cody), Avery Glover, Evelyn Zekert, Miles Zekert, Zak Zekert, and Brooklyn Hayes; as well as great-great-grandchildren Ryker Herrick and Daxton Herrick.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Annell Rushing; parents Charles S. Rushing and Mary Francis Webb; brother Owen Rushing; brother-in-law James Worley; and great-grandson Hunter Cunningham.
A viewing will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Mullin-Fuller Funeral Home in Wills Point. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, March 11 at 1:00 PM at the same location. Following the service, James will be laid to rest at White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point immediately after the service.
James will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His gentle nature, honesty, and unwavering dedication to those he loved leave behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.
