Jean Maia, née Loughmiller, passed away on October 9, 2026, in Crowley, Texas, at the age of 88. She was born on October 27, 1937, in Van Zandt County, Texas.
Jean moved through life with a presence that was unmistakable. She was strong-willed, opinionated, and dominant, qualities that shaped the way she met the world and the impression she left on those around her. Hers was a life marked by conviction and character, and she was remembered as someone who knew her own mind and lived with resolve.
In her working life, Jean served as a legal administrator for a law office in New Orleans, supporting a firm of more than 30 lawyers. It was a role that spoke to her capability, steadiness, and command, and it reflected the confidence others placed in her.
Beyond her work, Jean found joy in reading and was an avid lover of books. She also cherished traveling throughout the United Kingdom, embracing the pleasure of seeing new places and taking in the richness of those journeys. She had a deep fondness for elephants, a detail that added another distinctive thread to the fabric of her life.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Maia; her father, Ferron Loughmiller; her mother, Daphne Taylor Dilliard; her daughters, Rory Patterson and Christiana Matthews; and her sister, Junell Pasterneck.
She is survived by her son, Bradley Maia; her son-in-law, Dave Matthews; daughter-in-law Pru Horn and her step-son, Eric Wood. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Sean, Jonathon, and Scott, and her great-grandchildren, Morgan, Crystal, Caden, Conner, and Madeleine. In their lives, and in the memories they carry forward, Jean’s presence endures with strength and clarity.
She will be remembered for the force of her personality, the breadth of her interests, and the distinct way she made her mark on the people and places around her. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 11 am at White Rose Cemetery located in Wills Point, Texas.
