Obituary

Johnny Melvin Sims, aged 78, passed away on July 22, 2024, in Wills Point, Texas. Born on May 2, 1946, in Fruitdale, Texas, he spent his life making a notable mark through both his career and personal passions.

Johnny retired in August of 1998 from Brown Express Freight, where he worked as a dedicated Car Hauler and was a proud Teamster. His retirement did not mark the end of his influence, as he continued to impact the sprint car racing community. Known affectionately as "The Chassis Man," Johnny sponsored a Modified Sprint Car Team, generously supporting and nurturing young racers.

His personality was as dynamic as his career; a smart aleck with a knack for antagonizing, Johnny was also recognized for his heart of gold. This duality brought joy and a unique vigor to all who knew him.

Johnny was a beloved member of his family, survived by his daughter, Sheree Newton of Canton, Texas; his son, Jerry Sims of Florence, Arizona; grandchildren, Joshua Newton (Kelsi), Lindsey Shuart, Dylan Sims; and great-grandchildren, Brooke Thompson, Hayden Newton, Kori Newton, and Kyli Newton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Sims, and his parents, George Melvin Sims and Minerva Baker.

A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. noon on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Red Oak Cemetery, 599 TX-342, Red Oak, Texas 75154. The Mullin- Fuller Funeral Home in Wills Point, Texas, is assisting the family during this time.

Johnny's legacy will be remembered through the smiles and stories shared by those he touched, echoing his unique spirit and love for life. His absence will be deeply felt, but his impact will continue to resonate within the community and beyond.
