Obituary

Mary "Sue" Smith, 74, of Ennis, Texas, passed away on October 23, 2025, in Ennis.

Born on June 18, 1951, in Dallas, Texas, Sue was the daughter of Alvin Leo Risley and Sue Frances Esch. At the age of three in 1954, she was lovingly raised by her grandparents August "Papa" and Minnie "Mama" Esch in Grapevine, Texas. She attended Grapevine schools and later built a career as a security officer at I.T.S. in Dallas, where she worked for five years.

She married Barry Smith on September 9, 2009, in Ennis. She and Barry shared over thirty years of life together as partners, building a home and a deep bond before making it official. They shared ten years of marriage until his passing on September 21, 2019.

Sue was known for her strong will and spirited personality. She was never afraid to speak her mind and had a deep love for her family. She found joy in spending time with loved ones during holidays and special gatherings. Her kitchen was often filled with the comforting aromas of recipes passed down from her grandmother "Mama," whose culinary traditions Sue proudly carried forward through her cooking and baking.

She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and staying connected through social media—especially TikTok—where she delighted in sharing her thoughts and opinions with humor and candor. Her Pentecostal faith remained an important part of her life.

Sue is survived by her children: sons Danny "Donny" Risley; Dewayne "Wayne" Pyles and his wife Crystal; daughter Amy Burt and her husband Mike; brothers Danny Risley and his wife Cheryl, Billy Risley, David Burton, Steve Burton, and Ray Beech and his wife Heather; grandchildren Alicia and her husband Gabe, Michael, Triston, Nathan, Daleana, and Dallas; great-grandchildren Rylee, Kash, Amora, Zalena, and Kyrie; and mother-in-law Linda Huddleston.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Barry Smith; son Johnny Risley; grandparents August "Papa" & Minnie "Mama" Esch; mother Sue Beech and stepfather Fred Beech; sister Debbie Boyd; father-in-law Cecil Huddleston.

Sue's legacy lives on through the many lives she touched with her strength of character and unwavering love for family. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her.
