Sherman E
Hines
April 3, 1958 – January 31, 2026
Sherman Ellis Hines passed away on January 31, 2026, at his family home in Terrell, Texas, surrounded by friends and family who loved him deeply.
Sherman had endured a long and difficult journey with multiple health challenges, including diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic pain, and years of dialysis. After much reflection, he made the courageous and deeply personal decision to discontinue dialysis, choosing instead to spend his remaining days in comfort, peace, and the presence of those closest to him. He left this world on his own terms, wrapped in love.
To many, Sherman was a big teddy bear—gentle, accepting, and steadfast. He met people where they were, never judging their journey, only offering understanding and protection. He was a guardian by nature, a safe place for many, and a father figure to more than just his own children. His heart was as big as his presence.
He was known by many nicknames over the years—Sherman Merman, Hotshot, Burnin' Sherman, and Road Dog—but the name that mattered most to him was "Daddie."
For the last several years of his life, Sherman resided at Crestwood Assisted Living, where he built a second family. He was deeply loved by the residents and staff, and he loved them just as deeply in return. The bonds he formed there brought him comfort, laughter, and a continued sense of belonging. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff (family) of Crestwood Assisted Living for the compassion, dignity, and genuine love they showed Sherman every day.
Sherman was preceded in death by his father, John Eugene Hines; his mother, Peggy Joyce Gentry; his brother, Franklin Hines; and his sisters, Joyce Vest, Linda Sturgeon, and Terry Lewis.
He is survived by his brother, Randy Eugene Hines, and his sister, Elizabeth Gilmore. He also leaves behind his children: son Jason Sherman Waldrop and wife Jennifer McKeel Waldrop; daughter Jamie Louise Sturgill and wife Linda Kay Petrea; and son Kenneth Lee Garrison. He is also survived by his stepsons, Matthew Bryant, and Shawn Lee Jackson and wife Amanda Gynell Jackson.
Sherman was a proud grandfather to Sierra Green, Tony McKeel, Bernardo Garza and wife Kimberly Garza, Deborah Nicole Garza, Blake Jackson, Rachel Tate, Tabitha Garrison, and Dakota Garrison. He was blessed with great-grandchildren Auslynne Baker, Blakely Sky Jackson, Ava Correa, Lukas Garza, Kolby Garza, Hayleigh Esquivel, Emma Esquivel, Luis Tirado, Nevaeh Salazar, and Jackson.
Sherman's legacy lives on in the many lives he touched through his kindness, loyalty, and unconditional love. He will be remembered as a protector, a safe harbor, and a man who loved fiercely and authentically until his final breath.
